When the mobile network also becomes a sensor: a new dimension of 5G technology
November 3, 2026
By adding sensing capabilities to communication capabilities, network infrastructure takes on a new role. It can sense the physical environment and detect and track objects, including drones that are not connected to the network.
Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology adds sensing functions to the communication functions of a mobile network. By analyzing the reflections of radio signals from objects in the surrounding environment, information can be obtained about their presence, location and movement. In this way, existing communication infrastructure can also be used to create a picture of the physical environment.
The Ericsson ISAC System combines 5G radio technology, edge computing, artificial intelligence and signal processing, enabling the mobile network to be used not only for communication, but also for detecting and tracking objects in its surroundings. ISAC technology has a wide range of applications, including the protection of mission critical infrastructure and the enhancement of traffic safety.
Drone detection as a specific application
One particularly interesting capability of ISAC is the detection and tracking of drones, including those that are not connected to the mobile network. Instead of relying on communication with the drone itself, the network analyses the reflections of its own radio signals to identify the object and track its movement.
By combining information from several geographically separated mobile network locations, it is possible to observe an object from different angles and improve the reliability of its detection and the continuity of its tracking.
Such capabilities are particularly relevant in areas where timely and reliable situational awareness is important, such as mission critical infrastructure protection and public safety. ISAC is not intended to replace existing radar and other sensing systems, but to complement them by leveraging the widespread availability of mobile infrastructure.
From connectivity to understanding the environment
SAC therefore opens up a new dimension in the development of mobile networks. Infrastructure whose primary function is data transmission gains the ability to collect information about the physical world around it.
The first such capabilities are being implemented using 5G infrastructure, while the integration of communication and sensing functions also represents an important technological direction in the continued development of mobile networks.
Ericsson Nikola Tesla contributes to the development of ISAC solutions through the work of its experts.
