Vision Zero – Safe Future of Traffic

September 10, 2025

As part of the Vision Zero – Safe Future of Traffic conference, held on 9 September in Zagreb, Assistant Prof. Krešimir Vidović, PhD, Senior Solution Architect at Ericsson Nikola Tesla, was one of the participants in a panel that discussed the contribution of modern technologies to this important goal.

The conference brought together various stakeholders including representatives of the Ministry of the Interior, relevant services and departments of the City of Zagreb, representatives of the academic and business community, the Red Cross, the Croatian Institute of Emergency Medicine, the Croatian Firefighting Association, psychologists and forensic experts.

The framework for the conference is a project that the magazine Poslovni dnevnik launched two years ago to promote solutions that can bring Croatia closer to the goals of the National Road Safety Plan and Vision Zero, the European mobility strategy to as close as possible to zero fatalities in road transport by 2050. The project brings together transport and safety experts and technology leaders to address key challenges in the transport system by encouraging all stakeholders to take a joint step towards safer and more sustainable mobility.

At the panel Infrastructure and Technology – Smart Roads and Digital Safety, it was said that Croatia has state-of-the-art communication networks that are ready to provide new services which increase traffic safety. Assistant Prof. Krešimir Vidović, PhD, emphasized on this occasion that the key to this is the combination of new technologies, including artificial intelligence which is already being used for these purposes, modern communication networks and quality data, adding that these are the foundations of new services that provide better awareness of specific situations, which enables improved strategic planning and better tactical response. Answering the question of what will be the game changers in the next ten years, along with further development of technology, including 5G towards 6G, Vidović emphasized the preparation of use cases and the standardization of data in the transport sector at EU level.

One of the panels was dedicated to crisis mobility, i.e. traffic management in emergency situations in which modern technologies can make a big contribution by enabling mission critical communication.

The technology is here and it is ready to be used for this noble purpose, and a systematic approach and joint synergistic action by all stakeholders, which this conference encouraged, are necessary to achieve the goal.
