November 26, 2025

The fifth FER Connect, a traditional gathering of FER alumni and students, filled the entire D1 Hall, where the guest lecture Technology and Competitiveness: Europe and Croatia in the Race for the Future was held by Siniša Krajnović, PhD, President of the Management Board of Ericsson Nikola Tesla.

The lecture in which he shared his professional experience gained around the world was met with great enthusiasm from the approximately 250 attendees. He presented Croatia’s position in technological development and compared its competitiveness and innovation with other European countries, as well as on a global level.

The sense of responsibility he has towards the Croatian economy as the head of the largest domestic ICT company, the necessity of strategic investment in knowledge and technology, and the strengthening of the European single market and the development of talents were the highlights of Siniša Krajnović’s lecture. The audience was very interested and asked many questions which he answered for almost an hour.

“In a period of challenging geopolitical, social and economic circumstances, the technology race is becoming crucial for future competitiveness. The world is increasingly becoming multipolar, with Europe lagging behind the US and China in digital technologies and investment in R&D. Market fragmentation, capital shortages and slower workforce adjustments further complicate the position. At the same time, Europe’s strength lies in advanced manufacturing, renewable energy capacities, high scientific productivity and quality education,” said Krajnović.

“Generative artificial intelligence and new technologies open up space for innovation and reducing barriers. To ensure competitiveness at the European and national level, it is necessary to strengthen the European single market through investments in advanced technologies, cooperation between all ecosystem stakeholders and talent development,” concluded Krajnović.

The President of the FER Alumni Board, Mladen Pejković, pointed out that FER Connect brings together exceptional individuals who bring a new view and perspective on technology, connecting the economy and technological development, which benefits the wider community.

“This year’s second FER Connect represents a continuation of the tradition of relevant lectures, which, along with the view of top, globally relevant experts on strategic technological development, are also a meeting place for FER alumni, but also for all those interested in the impact of technology on the economy and society. We are very pleased that in one of his first public appearances after taking up the new position, Krajnović shared his rich international experience with the FER community,” said Pejković.

The Dean of FER, Prof. Vedran Bilas, PhD, thanked the FER Alumni Board for their continuous work, which has resulted in a series of extremely successful and recognized activities, such as the Alumni Foundation for annual scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and those who have distinguished themselves through excellence, the Alumni mentoring program for students, and ultimately FER Connect.

“There is no greater energy or stronger emotions at this faculty than the moment when the generations that have left this institution come together, and today they are connected by our strong alumni community. Many talents from FER began their professional journey at ENT, with which FER has been cooperating for several decades. I am therefore extremely pleased that one of Mr. Krajnović’s first appearances after taking over ENT is at FER,” said Bilas.

FER Connect is an initiative of the Alumni Board of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, which brings together former students, now renowned experts from various industries, with the aim of networking, sharing relevant information, and creating a platform for cooperation beneficial to the wider community. The committee consists of 16 alumni and was established at the initiative of the current dean, Prof. Vedran Bilas, PhD.
