MWC 2026: Evolution of networks, artificial intelligence and ecosystems shaping the future of connectivity
March 9, 2026
At this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Ericsson presented a vision that goes beyond technological trends and reaches into the very core of the global digital ecosystem’s transformation.
Under the theme “Enter New Horizons” the focus was placed on three major forces shaping the next decade of communication technologies: the exponential rise of artificial intelligence, the massive expansion of connected devices, and the strategic role of telecommunications in national security.
As with previous generational leaps, Ericsson articulates these shifts not only through vision, but through concrete technologies, demonstrations, and partnerships, reaffirming its leading position in the global transition toward 5G Standalone, autonomous networks, and emerging 6G possibilities.
AI, 5G SA and autonomous networks as the foundation of a new phase of digital evolution
In the keynote speech presenting Ericsson at MWC, Ericsson President and CEO Börje Ekholm emphasized that the explosive growth of AI technologies and sensors will radically increase the demand for high‑performance, reliable and adaptable connectivity. In this context, 5G Standalone represents a key prerequisite for realizing the architecture of the future and scaling AI from consumer devices to industry and public services.
At the same time, Ericsson is demonstrating leadership in autonomous networks through the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP) and an ecosystem of AI‑driven rApps. Solutions already used by operators such as AT&T, Swisscom and Vodafone show improvements in spectral efficiency of up to 8%, acceleration of optimization processes by up to 75%, and a significant reduction in network issues.
This progress marks an important step toward level 4 autonomous networks based on open O‑RAN standards and TM Forum initiatives.
Entering the 6G era: shaping new possibilities
Through a series of talks and sessions, Ericsson raises a central question: how can 6G become a winning strategy for the industry? The technological foundations of 6G, such as AI integration directly into network architecture and possibilities like ISAC (Integrated Sensing and Communication), were presented as areas that will transform the economy, industry and everyday life.
In Ericsson’s pavilion, visitors were able to experience demonstrations showing how the next generation of networks will integrate into real urban scenarios, industrial automation and enhanced user experiences.
New opportunities through monetization, network APIs and differentiated connectivity
Ericsson emphasizes that the next phase of growth in the telecom industry no longer depends solely on increasing network capacity, but on new monetization models built on differentiated connectivity, open network APIs, AI‑driven services and vertically specialized solutions.
Examples include premium FWA services, network slicing, and cooperations that demonstrate how network APIs can connect operators, developers and the industry into new digital ecosystems.
This is also reflected in the expansion of use cases, from digital identity to personalized XR/AR experiences, enabling operators to move beyond their traditional role toward a broader technology‑driven business, the so-called “techco” model that opens entirely new sources of value.
Security and mission-critical networks as a strategic component
Telecom is becoming a key element of national security, and 5G SA, network autonomy and hybrid connectivity enable the creation of highly reliable networks for mission-critical communication: essential for public safety, defense and vital state infrastructure.
A living digital ecosystem: 120+ partners in Ericsson’s pavilion
This year’s Ericsson showcase places particular emphasis on partnerships: more than 120 industry partners were involved in the pavilion demonstrations, representing over half of all the solutions presented. Ekholm highlighted that the success of 5G, and later 6G, relies on building a strong and open ecosystem that enables growth across all segments of the digital value chain.
ENT activities
The Ericsson Nikola Tesla team, led by the President of the Management Board Siniša Krajnović, held numerous meetings with customers and partners at MWC, including the signing of an agreement on the continued development of Crnogorski Telekom’s 5G network, accompanied by media activities in Ericsson’s pavilion.
Alongside the President of the Management Board, the ENT team included Hrvoje Benčić, Member of the Management Board and Director of Customer Solutions and Services, Milan Živković, Member of the Management Board, Ivan Barać, Director of Sales and Marketing for Hrvatski Telekom and Crnogorski Telekom, Jagoda Barać, Director of Sales and Marketing on Export Markets for the Operator Segment; Miroslav Kantolić, Director of Sales and Marketing for A1 Hrvatska, Telemach HR and alternative operators, and Besar Spahija, Head of the Kosovo Branch Office.
Through their activities, the ENT team further strengthened partnerships and reaffirmed the company’s strong presence on the regional telecommunications scene.
