FER students at a laboratory exercise in ENT Inventorium: practical insight into radio access networks

December 17, 2025

On Friday, 12 December, students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) participated in a laboratory exercise held in the ENT Inventorium.

The exercise was designed and implemented thanks to the cooperation of colleagues from the R&D department and the professor of the Communication Systems Practicum course from the Department of Communication and Space Technologies at FER. The goal of the exercise was to familiarize students with the processes that take place in real radio access networks through practical work on an educational data transmission system.

The system is based on the ADALM-PLUTO Software Defined Radio (SDR) educational platform, which enables the transmission and reception of signals, and a personal computer, which is used for data preparation and processing. By setting up several such systems, a simple radio network that enables mutual communication was simulated.

Through practice and software development for such a system, students gained insight into key processes that occur in real radio access networks at a much more complex level, from generating real data at the physical layer, through modulation and digital signal processing, to digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion, as well as transmitting and receiving signals in free space.

The laboratory exercise took place in a relaxed atmosphere, with an open discussion between the students and our colleagues. We look forward to continued cooperation and future laboratory exercises with upcoming generations of students.
