September 30, 2026
Organized by the company Codupo Compliance and under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Croatia, the Compliance Conference 2026, titled “New Standards and New Responsibilities” was held on September 29 in Zagreb. During interesting panel sessions, Croatian and international legal and compliance experts talked about new standards, anti-corruption, AI and compliance, corporate governance and relations between the rules and application of compliance in companies, further sharing their own examples of good practice. Among renowned Croatian and international experts was also our Compliance and Investigation Officer, Marin Herenda, who shared his knowledge and rich experience by participating in a panel discussion: “International Sanctions: from Regulatory Requirement to Daily Business Decisions.“
Marin Herenda highlighted the importance of compliance when doing business in an international environment, investing in employee education and awareness of international and local market regulations, as well as timely identification of potential compliance risks. Additionally, he commented on the importance of understanding the overall context of international transaction, including the business partners ownership structure, end users and product use, destination and potential further transfers. He emphasized that effective verification cannot be limited solely on automated screening of sanction lists, but demands an expert verification, continuous monitoring of business partners and timely cooperation of various functions within the company. Among other topics, the panel addressed the distinction between ownership and control, end use, routes and origin of goods, re-export, and emphasized the need to refrain from observing the elements of transaction separately.
